The firm won another trial following a four week jury trial against the Los Angeles Fire Department. The case was brought by a former probationary firefighter who was subject to harassment and a hostile work environment based on discrimination based on his age. The firm won a 10-2 jury verdict on claims for Harassment and also on a claim against the Department for Failure to Prevent Harassment. Motions for Attorney Fees and Costs to follow. Trial Attorney Steve Haney praised his staff for what he described as a ‘grueling’ trial that lasted just short of a month. ‘I appreciate the work of Paralegal Lauren Moorehead and everyone else that was part of the trial team,’ Haney stated.
Founding partner Steve Haney prevailed against George Peterson of the Peterson, Bradford and Burkwitz firm on a motion to disqualify the Peterson firm, which led to the Peterson firm withdrawing on a case on which the Haney & Shah firm filed a second motion to disqualify the Peterson firm. The Court ruled that the Peterson firm, who over the years has been one of the top choices of the County of Los Angeles Fire Department in defending the discrimination,
harassment, hostile work environment, failure to promote and retaliation cases brought by LACOFD employees who were wronged by the Department, would be disqualified from representing the Defendant in this matter.
